It’s that time of year when skin needs a little extra TLC. It could be as simple as using moisturising products more often, equally it could prompt you to reassess your beauty routine and the products that feature. With winter fast approaching, I’ve been taking care of my skin the easy way, by getting in a little extra beauty sleep. With the help of Penguin Sleep Tales and Dermalogica’s incredible new product; Sound Sleep Cocoon, it’s been a doddle.
Soph Hearts has always been a platform on which I share the things that I love and recommend. Its a lifestyle blog so that I can cover a bit of anything I fancy: beauty, Disney, sushi restaurants and Paris. I’ve also written more than my share of sleep based content, from mattress recommendations to evening routines, go figure. At this time of year I’d quite happily hibernate (or migrate to Florida) until spring, so this product feels like it was designed for me.
When Dermalogica reached out to introduce me to their new Sound Sleep Cocoon, it was a no-brainer. Skincare and sleep? Sleep and skincare? Two of my favourite things. Where do I sign up?
A transformative gel-cream which optimises nighttime recovery, Dermalogica describes Sound Sleep Cocoon as ‘a new way to glow’. Sold. While most products, quite reasonably, focus solely on skincare, this goes one step further. It provides lifestyle benefits too, in the form of a better night’s sleep. One of its key ingredients, the French Lavender essential oil, is motion-activated in order to promote a deep beauty sleep.
The combination of high-end price-point (£72.50) and previous experience of Dermalogica had my expectations high. Bold claims about ingredients, that Persian Silk Tree Extract reduces signs of skin fatigue whilst Wu-Zhu-Yu Extract works overnight to promote visibly radiant skin by morning, only raised them higher. Even so, I wasn’t disappointed. After using Sound Sleep Cocoon regularly for around a month I’ve definitely noticed that the product has me looking well-rested, and feeling it too.
Although this can be used every evening, I’d argue that it’s not really necessary. As an investment product, I’ve started to view mine as more of a luxury, using it around two-three times per week. This forms the last step of my evening skincare routine, often on top of a moisturiser for even further hydration, but both aren’t strictly necessary. I personally prefer to use it on Sunday and Monday evenings, which are days I could do with a little added luxury and a skincare pick me up. I then add it into my routine over any other days that I feel I’ll really benefit from it. It’s such a lovely product that I’m sure others will choose to use this daily, however, I can definitely still see benefits despite less frequent use. At a high-end price, I want the best of both worlds.
Penguin Sleep Tales is supposed to be a brilliant accompaniment to Sound Sleep Cocoon. I was advised to use them together in order to achieve a whole other level of rest. Honestly, I was incredibly sceptical about trying it. I’ve always loved reading paperbacks and haven’t been able to bring myself to switch to Kindles, Audiobooks and the like.
An initial resistance was born from overthinking. I wondered whether an adult, essentially being read a bedtime story is perhaps a little strange? Despite that, I wanted to give it a go and that I did.
Following my experience, Audiobooks isn’t an app I’m likely to get hooked on anytime soon. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how relaxing I found Sleep Tales to be. Although they won’t become a part of my regular nighttime routine, I will be sure to keep them in mind for times when I’m struggling to sleep. It ensues a sense of calm that’s similar to that achieved by background music at a spa. It’s relaxing and works well to clear your mind of any circling thoughts or worries.
Now that the clocks have gone back, beauty sleep seems a little easier to achieve naturally. I’ll still be reaching for sound sleep cocoon though, it’s a new favourite that I’ll be working into my routine no matter the season.
