At home beauty is at an all-time high. If anything, it’s helping us to realise just how many beauty treatments we can handle. Glue on nails allow us to achieve salon quality nails at home and it looks like they’re back for good. With so many pros, how can they not be!

WHY OPT FOR AN AT HOME MANICURE

To save time and money…

We all love a trip to the salon, but let’s be honest, they can get to be both time consuming and expensive. With the right glue on nails and a little practise, you can achieve salon quality nails at home. My current favourite, the Stiletto Medium Frenchie from SOSU by Suzanne Jackson are under a tenner for two applications. Those two applications will easily last a month and can even last up to six weeks with good maintenance. Applications only take up to about ten minutes from the comfort of your own home (that means no dashing around or trying to park).

Because there’s no much choice…

While many good salons offer a variety of colourways and designs, I’m someone who finds being offered a limited selection and then put on the spot pretty stressful. That’s without the anxiety of asking whether they’ll do a specific design and then wondering how much extra they’re going to charge you for it. You can get great glue or press on nails from so many different places both in store and online. The best part is that there’s no time limit on your decision. Browse at your leisure and pick up a selection if you fancy.

It’s worth considering that prices of glue on nails dramatically vary from brand to brand. While the cheap and cheerful ones may be great for a specific one time only look, remember that you typically get what you pay for and the slightly more pricy ones are likely to be of better quality.

Lastly, for more control…

I typically opt for at home manicures because they allow me complete control. I don’t have to fit my schedule around the next available booking and I can apply and remove them whenever I fancy. Trips to the salon can be so much fun, and I’m not trying to convert the diehard salon goers. Even they, though, may find that glue on nails are a great beauty product to keep on hand (excuse the pun) in case of emergencies.

HOW TO APPLY GLUE ON NAILS

Each box of glue on nails will typically advise how best to apply. However, there are a couple of possible additional steps that will make them stay put and look better for longer. Please consult the packaging in case of individual differences and safety precautions.

  1. Start with a clean slate by removing any nail polish. You should prepare the nails by soaking, trimming, filing, and using a wooden cuticle stick to clean the nails and push down the cuticles. To keep the nails as healthy as possible you may wish to do this a little while before application so that they can harden back up.
  2. Many kits advise buffing the nail before application but for healthier nails, you can skip this step. As long as you’ve properly prepped the nails, buffing isn’t usually necessary and does little but weaken the nail.
  3. Size up the false nails to your own and file down if necessary. Once you’ve done so, lay them out in the order you’ll apply them.
  4. For all nails: Spread a little of the glue onto your own nail and also onto the bottom half of the false nail before carefully applying. Make sure to gently push the nail down right to or slightly underneath the cuticle. Naturally, the lower you can get the nail, the longer they’ll last regrowth. Once the nail is definitely in the right position, press and hold down for 10 seconds. Have an acetone soaked cotton bud handy in case of any glue overflowing onto the skin around the nail. Repeat.
  5. Leave for a minute to ensure that all of the nails are fully dried. Then, coat them with a clear polish. This step won’t typically be advised on individual packets, but it will help to keep the nail shiny and perfect.
