Without establishing a go-to personal style, it can be difficult to shop for clothes that will work for you. It can even make putting outfits together and getting dressed in the morning a source of daily stress. The clothes taking up space in your wardrobe and your house should be working to your advantage. They should make you feel good and look good.

This year, I’ve experienced the end of a pregnancy, having a baby and navigating a postpartum body. Let’s just say that my body isn’t as familiar it used to be. I’m in the process of designing a dressing room and having wardrobes built in, so I’m on a mission to streamline my belongings and cull any clothes that just aren’t working for me. I want to establish a personal style portfolio so that my wardrobe makes sense and getting dressed is easier and more enjoyable.

If you’re struggling to pin down and properly establish a style, here’s some insight that has helped me.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

The first question you should ask yourself is; what is your style? Try to consider how you want to look, feel, and come across to others. Don’t get distracted by what other people may think or even what’s already in your wardrobe. Comfy and casual, edgy street-style, flattering and feminine, classic neutrals… the options are endless. What feels most like you? This will give you a great starting point. From there, you can asses the clothes that you already own and decide whether they suit the profile you’re aiming for. You can also use these descriptions to shop. I like to find inspiration online from other people with a similar style and body type.

AUDIT YOUR ACCESSORIES

The people that look put together, usually are. I know I catch myself admiring certain people who just look effortlessly good. Usually they’ve thought of the little details, hair, handbag, shoes, jewellery. Whether it’s classic gold hoops or flat backed body jewelry. Your jewellery gives away more about your personal style than you might think. It can also elevate the most simple of outfits or offer a finishing touch to more styled looks. I’ve recently downsized my shoe and bag collection. For me, it makes more sense to have a smaller selection of high quality items that I love than lots of items that I like but never really opt for.

WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE, TODAY?

I think a lot of us hold on to old clothes that aren’t serving who we are today. Maybe you’re hoping you’ll fit back into those jeans one day? Maybe you spent way too much money on that coat, and even though you never wear it, you feel like you have to hold space for it? Time passes quickly and before you know it, you have a closet full of old styles and trends that you’re probably never going to wear again. There’s nothing wrong with not always wearing the latest fashion, but the skirt that looked great on you in 2020… yes, five whole years ago, but that you haven’t worn since? It might finally be time to wish it farewell.

I’m forcing myself to be brutal when it comes to culling what’s in my wardrobe. I think the first step is acknowledgment. Filling your wardrobe with clothes that either don’t fit or that you always put back because ‘you’re not feeling it’ isn’t benefiting you. At all. In fact, there’s nothing worse than planning an outfit in your head only to remember 10 minutes before you have to leave that the buttons don’t quite do up. By all means, keep the clothes you love if they might realistically fit again (post-pregnancy is definitely one of those situations) but keep them in storage. Don’t torture yourself.

LET IT GO

Once you’ve established which clothes aren’t serving you anymore, make sure you give them a nice new life. I either put my unwanted clothes on Vinted or I donate them. Getting a good review on Vinted that tells me the buyer is going to appreciate the item far more than I do is a pretty good feeling. Plus, you can always put your earnings into some new clothes that feel more you.
