Norfolk Restaurant Week is a dining event here in Norfolk. Plenty of great Norfolk restaurants take part, offering discounted two-course and three-course weekday meals. As the deals only run on weekdays for two weeks, this year is the first that we’ve actually made it to any of the participating restaurants. We firstly headed to The Rose & Crown in Snettisham and then to Congham Hall the next evening.
Each of the Norfolk restaurants that we visited ran dinner menus at 2 courses for £18 or 3 for £23.
The Rose & Crown was Jamie’s choice and I’d not heard of, let alone dined there before. A charming countryside pub near the North Norfolk coast. Its decor is traditional yet changes slightly throughout its various little dining rooms, but the fireplace and ceiling lights make it a lovely date night location.
The service was slow, but friendly, despite the restaurant not appearing to be overly busy. We both went for three courses, although the portions were large so two would have been quite enough. I chose:
To start; Salmon and chorizo fishcake, spinach, warm tartare sauce.
A main of; Confit pork belly, heritage carrots, burnt apple.
To finish; Lemon meringue cheesecake, lemon curd.
The food looked and smelled so good that the only course I snapped was dessert. Overall we had a lovely evening. The starter was a highlight and despite pork belly not being a usual choice for me, I enjoyed it.
Overall I’d rate The Rose & Crown a 7/10 for quite slow service and good, but not unmissable food.
Congham Hall was my choice. Despite it being fully booked for the two-week event, we managed to sneak in from the waiting list. I had eaten here a few times before and the Norfolk Restaurant Week menu and service was up to their usual, impeccable standard.
To start, I opted for; Cured Loch Duart Salmon. Quail Egg, Rocket.
A main of; Tomato & Basil Risotto. Regato Cheese, Pine Nut.
To finish; Chocolate Marquise. Honeycomb, Chocolate Soil, Raspberry.
I also tried a little of Jamie’s starter and dessert. Firstly, his Seared Wood Pigeon with Creamed Polenta, Pea Shoots, and Red Wine, as pigeon isn’t a meat I’ve ever tried, and I certainly wouldn’t have been brave enough to order it for myself.
Then he chose Bakewell Pudding with Earl Grey Tea Ice Cream for dessert. I tried a little of this because I love Bakewell Tart and was so intrigued by the flavour of ice cream (which was gorgeous).
Overall I’d rate Congham Hall a 9/10. The service is top-notch, (although it did slow considerably throughout our meal, as the restaurant filled), and the food is even better. We actually have a stay booked in with them nearer to Christmas so I may share my thoughts on that here too. Do be sure to let me know if that’s something that you’d be interested in or find useful and what exactly you’d like to know more about.
