Sleep

The importance of sleep isn’t lost on me. From silk pillowcases to satin pyjamas, I really go all out to ensure a great 8 (plus) hours. I’ve written about some of my favourite bedding in the past but after some great discoveries and a new routine, I thought it was time for an update! In this post I’m sharing the best tips to maximise your beauty sleep (yes I do consider myself an expert).

CREATE A RELAXING BEAUTY ROUTINE

There are so many incredible benefits to a good evening skincare routine.

I recently discovered a couple of lavender oils which are perfect for evening use. After incorporating them into my skincare routine I’ve found not only that my skin loves them but that their scent does wonders to relax me. After a particularly long day, a bath is another great way to wind down and adding Himalayan salts infused with essential oils is sure to do the trick.

ESTABLISH HABITS THAT WORK FOR YOU

Banning electronics an hour or so before bed is pretty well known advice but I’ll hold my hands up to not following it. We’ve all heard the mainstream sleep advice but really, the best thing to do is to listen to your own body. Establish habits that work for you. That might mean grabbing a cup of calming tea, dozing off to Attenborough’s therapeutic voice or opting to read.

As rules of thumb, caffeine and alcohol are best avoided at least a few hours before bedtime. Going to bed at a similar time is usually a good idea too, as your body will begin to predict bed time.

I avoid eating too late by brushing my teeth pretty early to avoid temptation. I also find that electronics before bed don’t affect me as long as my phone brightness is turned right down and the tv isn’t showing anything too gripping.

INVEST IN YOUR HOME

I’ve always been open about my favour for quality over quantity. A great mattress is an investment and you can pick up good quality pillows at pretty reasonable prices. If we’re honest, buying cheap usually just means much more regular replacements.

Over the past year or so I’ve upgraded every part of my bedding bit by bit and Bed Guru kindly finished up the process by upgrading my pillows for me. The only exception being a new bed frame, which we’ve put off until moving house to avoid the hassle. Better quality bedding has made such an unbelievable improvement to the quality of my sleep. Pretty much all of my sheets and duvet cover sets are designer, found at much more reasonable prices than retail at TK Maxx.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF

It’s no secret that stress won’t do any favours for your sleeping pattern. Whilst I appreciate that saying ‘stop overthinking’ is easier said than done, there are at least preventative steps that can be taken in order to keep late night circling thoughts at bay.

Exercising regularly and eating healthily come with a whole host of benefits and better sleep is just one of them. Think I’m lying? Next time you order a takeout, pay attention to your quality of sleep that night. Balance is fine and I’d never suggest completely cutting out takeaways because I’m a foodie. However, the high salt content usually has me waking up multiple times in the night for water.

On the subject of water, are you drinking enough? Two litres is the goal but reaching it by chugging a litre right before bed is never going to go well. Drink plenty throughout the day, no problemo.
